FAQs for Cellular Shades

Cellular shades—often referred to as honeycomb shades—are constructed from a continuous piece of material that is pleated and bonded together to form distinctive honeycomb-shaped cells. The honeycomb design delivers best-in-class climate control by trapping air in pockets that insulate your space and help to regulate interior temperature. This means that your home stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, while lowering your energy costs!

The honeycomb-shaped cells in these shades trap pockets of air that help to insulate your space. Available double-cell shades—which have two layers of cells, one facing the interior and another facing the exterior—provide an even greater level of insulation.

So, if you’ve ever had the heater on during a cold snap, cellular shades will mitigate heat loss and reduce the energy required for heating. Conversely, cellular shades will minimize heat gain during the summer, helping you to maintain your desired room temperature with less reliance on air conditioning for cooling.

The signature feature is the honeycomb cellular structure, which can be tailored with single or double-cell configurations and a variety of pleat sizes. Our custom cellular shades come in 4 different opacities, ranging from sheer to room darkening, and can be crafted from fire-retardant materials for extra safety. You get even more versatility with unique options such as Top-Down/Bottom-Up operation—which allows you to raise and lower the shade in either direction for optimal privacy and control—Day & Night "dual shade" designs, and SmartFit with Frame for skylights and sloped windows.

Our custom cellular shades can also be paired with our vertical cellular shades, which are ideal for larger windows or sliding doors.

Top-down/bottom-up shades are shades that can be independently lowered from the top of the window or raised from the bottom of the window, for maximum privacy and light control. Top-down/bottom-up cellular shades are perfect for rooms that require privacy but still need natural light, making them an ideal solution for bedrooms and bathrooms.

Our innovative Day & Night "dual shade" design pairs two different cellular shade materials on the upper and lower portions of the shade.

While it is common to choose a more sheer material for the top and a more opaque material for the bottom, you can specify any color or opacity level for either shade, which makes the design possibilities endless. Moreover, the dual shades work in tandem, so you can raise or lower either fabric independently, resulting in even greater flexibility for optimal light control and privacy.
